What the VR Games Showcase Tells Us About VR in 2026

The August 13 VR Games Showcase (VRGS) show, hosted by Jamie Feltham, arrived with a notable expansion of PlayStation VR2 titles and a clear trend of porting flatscreen bestsellers into VR. The VRGS events are quickly becoming an important part of the VR calendar with new game reveals, updates, and release dates all proving that virtual reality as a medium continues to move forward.

The Rise of VR Ports

The showcase highlighted an ever-growing presence of VR ports. These are flatscreen games professionally ported into VR so that they look no different from VR-native games. Of course, plenty of the announcements at the VRGS were original titles built from the ground up for VR, but the overall direction was hard to miss. A flatscreen conversion arrives with the design work already done, so the path to revenue is shorter, and the quality is verified in advance by the original non-VR version. The biggest highlights in this category include System Shock, Total Chaos, and High on Life, all heavy hitters in flatscreen gaming.

System Shock

In terms of numbers, VR ports were just a fraction of the releases, but in terms of excitement, they could all be considered high points of the event. Impact Reality further reinforced that notion by launching an investment campaign in partnership with StartEngine. According to Impact Reality, the success of its Postal 2 Kickstarter campaign made the team reevaluate its funding strategy and focus on community-driven financing. The growth of Impact Reality (and its subsidiary Flat2VR) proves that ports will become an important part of the VR gaming landscape in the coming years.

PSVR2 Finds Its Second Wind

Expansion into PSVR2 was another noticeable trend at this year’s show. Bootstrap Island had its trailer footage captured on PS5, Omega Pilot: Evolution was shadow-dropped onto PSVR2, and many other developers announced their support for the system. The increased attention on PlayStation VR2 was evident throughout the show. This was further highlighted by the “Unlock the Vault” initiative, a dedicated publishing track from Impact Reality that aims to bring more PCVR and Quest titles to PSVR2. The first game revealed as part of that initiative was Drop Dead: The Cabin.

The exact reason behind the resurgence of interest in PSVR2 comes down to two factors. First, Sony cut the price of PSVR2 last year from $549 to $399. This was a permanent cut, and more recently the price has dipped even further to $299. As a result, new gamers are entering the market with PSVR2 being their first headset. Secondly, this new cohort is widely believed to have much higher spending power than typical Quest users, who spend the majority of their playtime in social VR and free-to-play games. It will be interesting to see how the upcoming titles fare on PSVR2 in terms of revenue.

Bootstrap Island

There you have it. As the VR Games Showcase grows larger, it becomes not just a gaming exhibition, but also a weathervane for the broader VR industry.
